BarracudaDrive 4.4 includes many new features such as uploading files by dragging and dropping files directly into your browser. The Content Management System now includes a new file server that is specifically designed for creating photo albums by automatically scaling your uploaded photos and creating thumb images for the uploaded photos. The video below gives a brief introduction to how this all works.

In addition to many new features, existing features have been improved. The file server can now manage files larger than 4 GBytes. We have also redesigned the administrator panel and made the application compatible with older browsers that do not support JavaScript. The bulletin board is updated and now works in all major browsers. We have also performed a number of smaller bug fixes and improvements.

WebDAV Session URL's

One of the unique features in BarracudaDrive 4.1 is the introduction of WebDAV session URL's . A session URL created by the Web File Manager is designed to be used by WebDAV clients.

The following video is a tutorial for the Web File Manager and the WebDAV server integrated into BarracudaDrive. The video demonstrates how easy it is to use a session URL to directly edit documents on the remote server.

Video tutorial:

WebDAV on Windows is a little odd and the Windows WebDAV clients have a hard time interoperating with other WebDAV servers. When you map a drive letter from your client Windows computer to any WebDAV server requiring authentication, one would normally have to login and have to login again to open any Microsoft Office document, making it very inconvenient to use other WebDAV servers. This inconvenience is unique to Windows integrated WebDAV clients. BarracudaDrive eliminates this inconvenience by providing you with a session URL requiring that you only login once by using a browser.

Notice that when you logout from the browser, you also invalidate the mapped WebDAV drive. Our unique session URL makes it safe to use the client from public places such as Internet cafés. Normally, logging out from a network drive in Windows is virtually impossible unless you reboot the computer. Therefore, other WebDAV servers are not safe to be used from public locations. However, BarracudaDrive makes using a network drive from un-trusted locations now secure because one can logout using the browser to invalidate the session URL and prevent further access to the remote drive.

We are planning on producing more videos on how to use the Web File Manager and the WebDAV server.

What remains is to explain in more detail "how to use a secure connection" and provide you more information on the warning message presented if you do not have a valid certificate. For professional use, we recommend installing a certificate by using our certificate tool.

We are also planning on producing a video on how to use other WebDAV clients such as DriveOnWeb and WebDrive for Windows.

We have released a free version of the BarracudaDrive application server for NSLU2 and the Unslung Linux firmware.

BarracudaDrive is a secure application server with an integrated scripting language, database engine, WebDAV server, Web File Manager, tiny SSL server, HTTPS tunnel, and various SLL VPN clients for the HTTPS tunnel.

The NSLU2 (Network Storage Link for USB 2.0 Disk Drives) is a device made by Linksys. It makes USB Flash memory and hard disks accessible over a network (NAS).

The SQLite database engine and the Lua scripting language are integrated into the BarracudaDrive server. The server supports what is known as Lua Server Pages (LSP). BarracudaDrive LSP applications are deployed as standard ZIP files. The ZIP files, which are in the "applications" sub directory, are loaded and mounted as read only file systems by the application server.

The server comes with a Content Management System and an Electronic Bulletin Board implemented by using LSP. The server also comes with an application designed explicitly to help new users configure the server by using a browser.

The blog engine powering this site is the same blog engine that comes with the BarracudaDrive application server. You can visit the Content Management System home page if you like to know more about the blog and the CMS engine, but please note that the CMS is just one of many applications in the BarracudaDrive server.

Running an application server such as BarracudaDrive on the NSLU2, by using an external USB flash memory for storing the database files, yields an application server that is virtually maintenance free. Technically, the server should run 24/7 for a good 20 years.

BarracudaDrive, or BD for short, is a product developed by using the Barracuda Embedded Web Server SDK and is well suited for running on the NSLU2. BarracudaDrive is a commercial product, but we are offering a free version for Unslung.

See the following page for more information regarding this release: BarracudaDrive3.9-beta. The press release and most of the documentation is designed for Windows.

NSLU2 Non-Commercial Version License:

You must read the Non-Commercial Version License file before downloading.

Unslung instructions:

Telnet to your NSLU2 and download as follows: wget http://barracudaserver.com/products/BarracudaDrive/bd.unslung.3-9.tar.gz

Unzip to any directory, but you may want to create a dedicated directory for BD such as /home/bd

Start server with the following command ./bdd –p8080 –s8443, where 8080 is the HTTP port number and 8443 is the HTTPS port number. You can also start the server as a daemon: ./bdd –p8080 –s8443 -d
